Snow Day Fun

The Idea

Our idea for the fort was to build a hut out of branches. Then we would cover it with snow to make the igloo. Since the snow near our house was not compactable, the branches would help support the snow. Then, we would use a tarp as the door. We ended up building the fort in between two trees so we could lean the branches on the two trees. For this project I worked with my best friend Starr, my dad, and my dog also tagged along for the fun.

The pictures below show the initial process. First we used branches for support and then added more branches with leaves so we could have the hut figure. After we set this up it took us about forty minutes to build a base that was only a foot high. So we decided that we would wait until Saturday to finish making the base. We hoped overnight the snow might be more useable than it was on that Friday afternoon.

Day Two's Adventure

On Saturday it was five degrees and very windy. So we did as much as we could before leaving it for Sunday to finish. None of us really wanted to get frostbite.

Day Three's Fun

So we ended up building up the snow as far as we could. Even though the snow did not stick as much as we hoped it would. It was a lot easier to use than it was Friday or even Saturday. We were able to to build it as far as we could and then the branches became the roof of the fort. Plus we also used a tarp to cover any spots that were not covered.

Picture from a Distance

Building the fort proved to be difficult because the snow was not as compactable as we wanted it to be. Overall, it was still a lot of fun to make. I got to spend some time with my family, friends, and dog. I also realized that my dog loves to eat wood. So that was also a challenge since the dog kept trying to eat the sticks. It was a really fun project. Even though it took longer than expected it was still a lot of fun. Shadow is definitely exhausted after a day playing in the snow.
